The Mount Horeb Volunteer Fire Department consists of around 65 members - primarily volunteers.  In the recent years, we have been forced to start hiring full time employees to fill the daytime shifts.  Since the Village of Mount Horeb is within commuting distance with Madison, WI, many of the volunteers must leave the area in order to work and earn a living.  This can leave a gap in the coverage of the community.  This is where the full time employees come in.

Volunteers serve to fill whatever roles they can.  Some fill in night and evening ambulance shifts, others take shifts when they can.  Without these volunteers, the department simply could not function.  The volunteers are still considered the bread and butter of the department.

The daytime staff also serves many valuable roles, we need these individuals as well.  Some handle the administrative work such as billing and correspondences (these people also make sure our bills get paid as well!)  Others are in charge of maintaining the vehicles, writing preplans and other paperwork.  Lastly there are always the odds and ends that just need to be done on a daily basis.  Some of these things need the daily attention that might not get done with volunteers.

As you can see, both the volunteers and the paid staff have their role in department.  We all work very well with each other.  We are one team with the same goals, to support the community in the best way we can.

Are you interested in joining the fire department, EMS or both?  Stop by the Station and talk to a member!  We are always looking for dedicated  individuals who have a desire to be apart of something bigger than themselves.
